Baptisms at UDLC

In baptism, we hear a promise spoken over us before we can earn it or explain it: you are a beloved child of God.

A New Birth Into a Living Hope

Through water and the Word, God claims us, names us, and welcomes us into a community shaped by love, mercy, and hope. Baptism marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith—one lived together, supported by prayer, and rooted in God’s boundless grace.

Common Questions

  • Baptism is for people of all ages. At Upper Dublin Lutheran Church, we baptize infants, children, youth, and adults. Baptism is not about what we do or understand, but about what God promises and does for us—claiming us as beloved and welcoming us into the body of Christ.

  • Lutherans understand baptism as a gift of God’s grace, not something we earn or achieve. In baptism, God acts—using water and the Word—to forgive sin, give new life, and claim us as beloved children of God. Baptism joins us to Christ, connects us to the body of Christ, and marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith lived in trust, love, and service.

Because baptism is based on God’s promises rather than our understanding or faithfulness, Lutherans affirm that one baptism is sufficient. If you or your child have already been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we recognize and celebrate that baptism. It is not repeated, because God’s promises are sure, enduring, and faithful for a lifetime.

  • To learn more or to schedule a baptism, please contact Pastor Keith Anderson at kanderson@udlc.org. Pastor Keith would be glad to connect, answer your questions, and help you take the next step.

  • Baptisms take place during one of our Sunday morning worship services. Baptism happens within the context of worship because it is a communal event—one in which the congregation promises to support and pray for the baptized in their life in Christ. It is a moment of shared commitment, joy, and celebration for the whole community.

  • There are no requirements for baptism. Baptism is a gift of God’s grace. We do encourage individuals and families to spend some time worshiping with us and getting to know the congregation, since baptism is celebrated within the life of the community. Prior to the baptism, you’ll meet with Pastor Keith to talk about the meaning of baptism, what happens during the baptismal rite, and what it means to be part of the UDLC community.

  • Godparents (also called sponsors) are special people who promise to love, encourage, and support the baptized in their life of faith. They may come from different Christian denominations or faith traditions. The most important thing is not their affiliation, but their commitment to care for the baptized, pray for them, and walk alongside them with love and support.

  • Baptism is an ancient and meaningful rite that uses simple, powerful signs—water, light, and oil—joined with the promises of God.

In baptism, we gather as a community to welcome the baptized, affirm our faith together, and remember God’s saving work through water in the Bible.

Water is poured over the forehead of the baptized as these words are spoken: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The baptized is then anointed with oil on their forehead, marked with the sign of the cross, and hears the promise: “You have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.” A member of the congregation lights the baptismal candle and says, “Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” The congregation then joyfully welcomes the newly baptized—with prayers, applause, and celebration.
