Did you know that the first time the word “homosexual” appeared in the Bible was in 1946 with the release of the first Revised Standard Version? “1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture” is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. Our Lenten Study will be led by Professor Leslie Virnelson from United Lutheran Seminary. These four Sundays will be based on her forthcoming book, Fruit of Her Hands: Women, Work, & Society in the Hebrew Bible (Oxford University Press, 2025), which explores how specialized roles for women are reflected in the texts of the Hebrew Bible, focusing on four: midwives, diviners, weavers, and sex workers.
